How to Hear God’s Voice

How can we hear God?

We can hear God by reading His Word.

By steeping in His truth we become infused with it. A great actor will lose himself in the character of the part  he is playing. The essense of that character will rub off on him until he becomes more and more like that character. Likewise if we lose ourselves in the reality of Christ's character we will become alive in His truth through His spirit. We spend so much time lost in the reality that the world gives us. We lose ourselves in ourselves and in so doing become bound by our own limited reasoning. We lose ourselves in the world and become ensnared by the decietful reasoning of the world. We pay heed to every voice and neglect the one true voice. We hear God by getting to know Who He Is through His Word. Who does our attention serve? On who do we spend the energy of our life?

“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon [money, possessions, fame, status, or whatever is valued more than the Lord]." Matthew 6:24

Wait on Him in the silence of prayer.

Take time to sit in silence and listen. The monastics pray for 6 hours during the day and four hours at night. To the world this is the waste of a life. But through the eyes of faith this sacrifice is the most important work of all. Unless we are rooted in the vine of life, nothing we do bears any good fruit.  Prayer isn't just speaking to God. It's listening to Him.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." John 15:5

Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain. Psalm 127:1

Walk in the Way

Listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit however small and yield to them. Whether it be the way you spend your time, the things you watch, the words you say or don't say. Follow the path of love. Surrender to the Holy Spirit. Don't harden your hearts.

Today, if only you would hear his voice,
“Do not harden your heart" Psalm 95:8

For every small surrender to God's will will bring more grace from the Holy Spirit.

The more you listen the more you will hear.

The more you give of yourself, the more you will receive.

Then He said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear. By your own standard of measurement [that is, to the extent that you study spiritual truth and apply godly wisdom] it will be measured to you [and you will be given even greater ability to respond]—and more will be given to you besides. 25 For [a]whoever has [a teachable heart], to him more [understanding] will be given; and whoever does not have [a yearning for truth], even what he has will be taken away from him.” Mark 4:24-26
